Bogolan Art

Using cotton textile strips woven in villages outside Bamako, Kader and his eager art students stitch together the fabric to make large canvases, which are bound together using a solution made from cooking the leaves of the Ngalma. Combining mud from the Niger River with leaves from the Npekou tree and wood ash, Kader and his students create reddish colored dyes for painting, enabling them to create authentic Bogolan art as it has been made for centuries.

Students’ art is available for purchase at the Association building, which is located in the Lafiabougou district of Bamako, behind the cemetery (maps aren’t very accurate, but ask any cab driver to take you to Kader Keita and he’ll get you there). Additionally, Kader ‘s art is available for purchase, and 20% of all proceeds go directly to the operating budget of the Association.
